Road Construction Project Near Lewis
The Cobb County Department of Transportation (Cobb DOT) has started construction on the Jim Owens Road - Lewis Elementary Project (X2801- 2016 SPLOST) as well as the Acworth Due West Road at Jim Owens/Mars Hill Church Roads Project (X2301 - 2016 SPLOST), which were combined for construction due to their proximity.
The combined project consists of the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Acworth Due West Road and Jim Owens Road/Mars Hill Church Road to replace the existing 4-way stop, and the construction of a right-turn lane at the main entrance to Lewis Elementary School, which will further enhance the school’s traffic flow. The combined project also includes the installation of sidewalks, roundabout street lights, and driveway improvements at Lewis ES.
Construction of the new roundabout will require closure of Mars Hill Church Road at its intersection with Acworth Due West Road. The closure is anticipated to start late February or early March 2020, and end in July 2020. The exact dates for the closure will be provided by Cobb DOT when determined. A map showing the anticipated Mars Hill Church Road detour route is below.
Once intersection traffic is shifted to the new roundabout traffic configuration, Mars Hill Church Road at Acworth Due West Road will reopen (end of July 2020) and final project construction activities will continue. The overall project is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2021.
Updated information on this project and other Cobb DOT projects is available online: cobbcounty.org/transportation/projects/updates.
Mars Hill Church Road closure dates will be provided as soon as these are determined. Remaining 2019/2020 school year early release and Lewis special event dates have been forwarded to our contractor - to ensure these unique school peak traffic hours are not affected by construction lane closures.
